Graphic design and visual identity

An identity is not a logo. It is what lets your business be recognised on a website, an invoice, a post and a sign, without anyone having to decide the colours again each time.

What the identity covers

How it runs

  1. 01

    Understand

What you do, who you speak to, and what the landscape around you looks like. An identity is designed against a context, not in a vacuum.

  2. 02

    Directions

Several visual routes, shown early enough that you can eliminate some, which is the most useful act of the phase.

  3. 03

    Refinement

The chosen direction is pushed into detail and tested against real uses rather than a presentation board.

  4. 04

    Delivery

The files, the rules, and the identity applied to your first materials.

Identities in use

The real test of an identity is watching it hold across a whole site rather than on a board.

Common questions

Can we keep our current logo?
Often yes. Many brands do not need a new logo but a system around it: palette, type, rules. We say so when that is the case.
Is design separate from building the site?
It can be, but we prefer them back to back. An identity designed by the same team that builds the site avoids a loose translation between a mockup and code.
Do we own the logo?
Yes. The source files are handed over, and the identity is yours.
